The EcoFlap blog: news and views on draught-proofing and energy saving.

The waterproof Ecoflap

The waterproof Ecoflap under test conditions

The same design principles that make the Ecoflap so draughtproof also enable it to withstand high water pressure, as demonstrated in our video. The wood of the door let through water while the  waterproof Ecoflap resisted for the duration of the test.

We put the Ecoflap through its paces with 100 pascals of water pressure for several minutes – watch the video to see what happens. Please bear with the video as the quality isn’t what it might be but it demonstrates the point.

Flood defence

If you’re in a flood-prone area and have installed flood defence measures, you don’t need to worry that the letterbox is the weak link. An Ecoflap on the inside of your door will withstand a great deal of water, as it will only be pushed further shut the greater the pressure.

In an article from the Hull Daily Mail in December 2013, one Hull resident used anything to hand to try to block her letterbox, including cushions, as water gushed in, but sadly the water won and caused a great deal of destruction. In this article on the Somerset floods, water “gushing through your letterbox” is taken to be a predictable element of flooding, as it is in the comments on this article on ThinkinGardens. Pendle Borough Council recognises the risk posed by an ordinary letterbox and in an article no longer online advised sealing up letterboxes in the event of a flood warning.

The Ecoflap may not prevent your house being flooded in the event of very serious weather events, but it could buy you vital time and will without doubt play a significant part in your flood defences. And all the while we just have cold and windy weather to put up with, the Ecoflap will prevent draughts whistling through your letterbox and help to keep your house warm and your thermostat down.

Google Nest comes to the UK

Google Nest available through npower

The Google Nest, or Nest Learning Thermostat to give it its proper name, is now available to npower customers in the UK.

Automatic thermostat adjustments

Google Nest learns a household’s temperature preferences, automatically adjusts the thermostat and can turn the boiler on and off. It knows to turn down the heat when the house is empty, and if you want to get the heating on before you get back, a smartphone app lets you do just that, as the Google Nest connects to your wifi.

Redesign for the UK market

Google Nest has had considerable success in North America. Interestingly, it had to undergo a complete redesign before its UK introduction as, according to the GreenWorld article, “UK households tend not to have thermostats” – really? We do. UK boilers use a higher voltage wire than North American ones, another aspect that had to taken into consideration for the UK product.

Potential savings

This sort of progress, allowing fine adjustments and ‘smart’ use of energy through technology, is very welcome. Nest claims that using its gadget will help customers slice 20% off their energy bill. On the figures Nest itself gives of a UK household’s annual energy expenditure of £1,342, that saving amounts to a whopping £268. However, given that the Google Nest retails for £179, or £249 with professional installation, and if you want a stand it’s another £29, you’re looking at a couple of years before you get the benefit of the saving.

Nest won’t banish draughts

This is great, and anything that allows households close monitoring and control of their energy usage should be welcomed. It’s vital to bear in mind, however, that what the Nest will be helping to control is the temperatures as they currntly are in your house, in other words, using a Nest won’t magically make your house energy-efficient. If your boiler is over the hill, your windows aren’t double-glazed or your house is draughty then you’ll be using more energy than you need to to keep your house a comfortable temperature. Therefore, if you’re going to install a Nest, or advise people that it’s a smart move, which in many ways it probably is, remember the importance of assessing the energy-efficiency of the house as a whole.

Is your thermostat in the hall?

Despite Nest’s comments, our experience is that many UK households do have a thermostat, and often it’s in the hallway, near the front door and by a letterbox. The Ecoflap will make an enormous difference to that draughty letterbox, cutting draughts completely. The temperature rises in your hall, the thermostat can be set lower (with or without a Nest), your boiler works less hard, your energy consumption falls and so do your bills. Sarah’s broken EcoFlap

Sarah’s broken Ecoflap

Fproduct-7Daily Telegraph journalist Sarah Lonsdale loved her Ecoflap and has recommended it several times over the last four years (in January 2010, March 2010 and October 2012), often in glowing terms:

“We have, however, found success with the Ecoflap, a new, robust letterbox insulator, which is screwed onto the inside of the front door and removes draughts completely and has so far stood up to our postman’s vigorous shoving.”

“Of all the draught-busting products I tried, this was the most effective and has made a real difference to our hallway area.”

so, after years of service, we were surprised to read in the latest review about the problems her postman was having with it. He struggled with it so much that eventually the flap came off. The broken Ecoflap fell to pieces, stopped doing its job and the draughts were back. Sarah was so fed up with having a draughty hallway again that she was contemplating giving up on a letterbox altogether.

We’re always upset to hear that a customer is having problems with their Ecoflap, so we got in touch with Sarah to see if we could help. It turns out that Sarah’s front door sports the first ever version of the Ecoflap, ie original Ecoflap from about 4 years ago, which might explain why things went wrong.

Why the old Ecoflap sometimes has problems, and how we responded

The very first versions of the Ecoflap had extra plastic ribbing as strengthening where as in 2011 the second generation ones had an aluminium insert that helped with strength, rigidity and ease of closure.

Eventually Sarah’s Ecoflap failed through pressure of deliveries, especially as with a very small external letterplate her postman was wrestling with it on a daily basis (just imagine how much post a Daily Telegraph journalist must get).

In addition, on the first version, when large or folded post tries to get through it would sometimes push up on the top of the flap and stop the Ecoflap from opening.Trying to bash post through a closed letterplate will be hard work.

Since 2011 we have had a ‘widget’ that makes sure the flap rotates and lifts out of the way to allow even very thick items to be posted through a wider range of letterbox sizes without putting force on the top part of the flap.

If like Sarah, you are having some problems with larger post items, as well as updating your Ecoflap it’s worth having a good look at your letterbox. The Ecoflap can acommodate quite sizeable parcels, but if your external letterbox is narrow then that will always be a restricting factor. As deliveries such as newspapers are folded to get through the narrow external letterbox pressure can be placed on the Ecoflap that can lead to problems with the old design. You can simply increase the hole in the door to match the Ecoflap dimensions to get the full benefit of draught-proofing plus easy deliveries.

What have we learnt?

The main lesson is that we should have let all our existing customers know that there was a new version of the Ecoflap on the market. We should have brought the new Ecoflap to her attention and explained the benefits. Sarah suggested that we should go back to the drawing board and indeed we already had and solved her problems three years ago.

Can we help?

We’re always working on refinements to the Ecoflap to make it better and more robust. If you’re experiencing any problems please contact our customer care team and we’ll be happy to advise. It may just be that your Ecoflap is showing its age and needs updating. What a difference a widget makes.

EcoFlap in red stripy scarf

#coldhomesweek 2014

Here’s a white Ecoflap cosying up in a scarf for #coldhomesweek 2014, the initiative from Energy Bill Revolution that has had us wrapping up in scarves and tweeting selfies in order to raise awareness of the issues around cold homes.

Damp and draughts

Your home can be cold for many reasons, from Mediaeval walls to living at the top of a hill to being damp, added to which each of us has our own idea about what’s an acceptable temperature. Some of us are constantly on our feet, others spend many hours sat still, so there is no one simple answer to how to heat your home in the most appropriate way for you. What we would all agree on though is that we don’t want cold draughts swirling about, and we don’t want to be constantly having to adjust the thermostat – we want to put a solution in place and forget about it.

Ecoflap – a fix and forget solution

The EcoFlap is one such solution. It fits, very simply, on the inside of your letterbox. It’s weighted to blow more firmly shut the harder the wind blows, but puts up no opposition to items being posted through it, so your letter box won’t be left wedged open for hours, letting in lots of cold air. Once your Ecoflap is fixed (no drills, no nails), you can forget all about it – unless of course you pause to admire it every time you collect the post.
